Louis Mattioli
Louis Mattioli (1954-1992) co-authored the book for Rodgers & Hammerstein's State Fair with Tom Briggs (FANY nomination Best Book of a Musical; FANY Award Best Musical 1995-96 season; 2 Tony Award nominations).
While attending the University of his native Wisconsin, Mr. Mattioli played leading roles at most of Milwaukee's professional theatres in productions such as Fiddler on the Roof, Leave it to Jane, The Apple Tree and You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown. He also directed and/or choreographed area productions of The Boy Friend, Camelot, Bells Are Ringing and The Threepenny Opera. As a singer, he was a staple on the local cabaret and nightclub scene.
He made his Broadway debut in the 1977 10th anniversary revival of Hair, appearing in subsequent productions and tours of the musical, with other NYC appearances including Bill Solly's Sweet William and numerous cabaret engagements and trade shows, first as half of the singing duo Buckwheat & Lazoo, and later with the trio Vocalease. He directed and/or choreographed New York productions of Cole, Bye Bye Birdie, Li'l Abner, On the Town and, with his State Fair collaborator Tom Briggs, a revision of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Allegro. Mr. Mattioli died in 1992 at the age of 38.
